Number of Bicyclist and Pedestrian Deaths Continues to Rise

bike accident lawyerLast year, highway deaths fell to their lowest levels since 1949, according to a report from The Los Angeles Times. But although traffic fatalities are seeing record lows at 1.9%, the number of fatalities involving bicyclists and pedestrians is sadly on the rise.

At Nadrich & Cohen LLP, our bicycle accident attorneys work every day with victims and the families of victims who have been injured or killed in bicycle accidents. No one should have to endure this avoidable tragedy, and we are constantly reminded that a person’s entire world can change forever in just the blink of an eye. That’s why we work so aggressively to defend the rights of bicycle accident victims.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration points out that although traffic fatalities saw a 26 percent decline over 2005, bicycle deaths rose by 8.7 percent (to a total of 677) and pedestrian deaths rose by 3 percent (to a total of 4,432). “Fatalities are more of an urban phenomenon,” points out Ted Rogers, author of the BikinginLA blog.

"You have high population areas like California where you have a lot of deaths, and then you have rural states that don't have the traffic, they don't have the cyclists." Rogers tracks cyclist deaths in the Los Angeles region.

Rogers went on to tell the Los Angeles Times that 70 cyclists in Southern California died in various road mishaps, a huge jump from only 49 the previous year. Furthermore, the NHTSA points out that 70 percent of bike-related deaths involve head injuries, and only one third of cyclists wear helmets. This should serve to remind us all about the importance of helmet safety.

Have you or someone you love been injured or killed in a bicycle accident? Bicycle accidents are devastating on their own, and you shouldn’t have to bear the financial burden as well. You may be entitled to compensation, but you need to act quickly. The bicycle accident attorneys at Nadrich & Cohen have recovered more than a billion dollars for our personal injury clients, and we fight aggressively in the pursuit of justice.
